Childrens home ‘Promise’

Drugs, alcohol, incarceration, or the lack of will or ability, can all be reasons why children are unable to stay at home. There are many single mothers on Curacao who can't afford the care for their children. Many children live on the streets. 

Fatherless society

Curacao is sometimes called a 'fatherless society', because of the great number of single mothers. It is widely accepted for men to have multiple partners, and multiple children with several women.
Single mothers, dealing with problems like addiction, have a very difficult road ahead, because they are the ones taking care of the family. Often extended family will end up with the children, but this doesn't always improve the circumstances the child lives in. When it becomes apparent that a child lives under terrible circumstances, they are frequently places in boarding homes.

A home

As opposed to boarding homes, 'Promise' offers to place these children in a family situation. A home in a safe and protected environment with a father and a mother. There are many advantages to this type of placement: it provides a safe and trusted environment, and personal attention and love are guaranteed. The Bible is our guide in raising and guiding the children.

 

The purpose of 'Promise' is to provide housing, care and guidance to children ages 0 to 18 years. Our focus is on any child who lacks needed care in the home environment. This usually ends up being children whose parents are dealing with some form of addiction.

Not easy

Some children are placed voluntarily by the parent(s), but more commonly, children are placed by the Department of Children's Services. These children are usually placed with a judges order.
Caring for these children is not always easy. Many are seriously traumatized and often suffer from disordered ability to attachment. Additional help and attention is often required.
